Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have a condition known as trigeminal neuralgia on the left side of my face. My oral surgeon has prescribed Klonopin and it does help. It has returned and seems to be the same intensity as before. If it doesn't disappear for good, what recommendations are there for a next-step treatment? Thank you.
I have gone through your query and can understand your concern... Trigeminal neuralgia is a condition characterized by episodes of intense pain in the face. It affects only one side of face. The pain can get aggravated by whisteling, shaving or touching some areas of face known as trigger points. First of all permanent treatment of trigeminal neuralgia is not possible. Early treatment consist of medicines that should be taken regularly for a long period of time. If patient doesn't respond to medicines surgical treatment is advised. Your doctor has prescribed you Klonopin (clonazepam). I would suggest taking carabazepine 100mg thrice a day for 2 months. Klonopin can also be continued.
Refer to your oral surgeon Hope this information helps
