Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has type 2 diabetes (diagnosed 3 yrs ago). He is taking gliclazide (60mg x1 daily) and metformin(750mg x2 daily) for diabetes. He takes ibuprofen (600mg x 1 daily) as well as Tylenol 3 s (approx. 6 daily) for a 30 yr old back injury - 3 herniated disks. His glucose readings are usually 8-11 mmol/L daily. He takes 30 mg amitrytaline at bedtime. He has taken these medications previously listed for the last three years. only difference being, the amitrytaline has been increased from 10 mg to 30 in the 3 yrs. In the last 6 months he became very sick and was diagnosed with fatty liver. His own doctor became seriously ill and closed his practice one year ago(saw him for 30yrs) A new doctor prescribed him new medication 4 months ago and he started taking apo-rosuvastatin - 5mg x1 daily and sdz-ramipril - 5mg x1 daily. The doctor stated that it would be best to start the medication just in case he had a heart attack because he would have a better chance recovering. Cholesterol and blood pressure were within reasonable ranges before starting last 2 medications. In the last 2 months, he has experienced dizzy spells and fell during one of them. He is 220 lbs and 5 11 . He does not smoke or drink. He has changed his diet a lot but not eliminated all fatty or sugary foods up to this point. He has since experienced some discomfort twice in the last 6 months in regards to pain in his liver but not to the extent 6 months ago. I am concerned with overloading his injured/damaged liver with all this medication, and do have abit of a concern that the dizziness possibly is being caused by either of the last 2 medications. Feedback would be appreciated.
You'd really have to have an exam for this. Causes of dizziness can be broken into two groups. Blood not going to brain and vertigo. They usually feel different. In diabetes, there are many reasons for either. The vertigo can occur with nerve damage to inner ear or stroke or near stroke. The blood flow issues can be from something (heart attack, heart rhythm change) but very frequently occur from nothing at all ! Diabetics can have dis-regulation of blood pressure. It is hard to treat.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
