Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I made a flight to east coast and returned yesterday. Upon arriving on east coast I felt water in my ear rolling around. I have been taking generic claritin and generic flonase. Upon returning last night, it is much worse. I have a lot of pressure and pain and am taking motrin Question??? Can you prescribe medication?
Well, when the flight takes off or descends, the pressure inside the ear and outside is not in balance and it causes eardrum to bulge outwards. It can cause pain and blocked feeling in the ear. It is generally temporary, and get better quickly after the flight. In a few cases there can be fluid accumulation inside the ear causing fullness, pain and blocked feeling.
As of now you can take nasal decongestant drops like those containing Xylometazoline or Oxymetazoline. You can continue Motrin for pain. You can also try to pinch your nostrils gently and close your lips and blow your nose. This can help to unclog the ear, but do very gently and of there is pain do not try it again. You can also continue Claritin. In case if you do not get better in 2-3 days get checked by an ENT Physician.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Honey Arora, Dentist
