Suggest Treatment For Fever Blisters In A Child

My son is 9 years old. Has had fevers in the past week and ended up getting fever blisters. We re going on day 2 of not really eating and his lips and breath smell bad. When I took him to the er 3 days ago they finally gave him acyclovir pills for the blisters. They seem to be pusy and not getting better. Poor thing is always tired and not wanting to eat. Should I take him back to the er or wait for his doc appointment on Tuesday?

Hello,

Fever with blisters are seen in the following conditions:
1) Chicken pox
2) Measles
3) Herpes simplex virus
4) Erythema multiforme
5) Impetigo
6) Small pox

He needs to be examined thoroughly by a pediatrician. So please take him to his doc as per appointment. Treatment depends upon the cause of fever with blisters. Until then you can give paracetamol syrup for fever. Give him liquids so that he doesn't get dehydrated.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
