Hi,I am Dr. Amitkumar Sharma (Internal Medicine Specialist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has been feeling 101.0 temp, chills, no appetite, back pain and he won t go to emergency room. He had these same symptoms before and we went Yale New Haven hosp emergency room. They gave him blood tests and CAT scan but they were never able to give him a reason for his discomfort. He stayed several hours and his temp finally was normal but we never knew what caused this problem. This has happened to him several times since he was 20ish. He is 71 now. He had two back operations and there is a a heredity health issue in his family with ankylosing spondilitis. A blood test indicated he was positive for that disease but was never sure if it was a problem for him. I tried to check symptoms for menigitis but had trouble getting info. Do you know what his problem may be and should I try to talk him into going to the emergency room? Thank you for any advice you can give.
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service. I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
He has ankylosing spondylitis so back pain is obvious but you are saying he also has fever with chills and back pain. Does he has burning micturation or increased frequency of micturation or pain in loin or pain during urination. If anything above is there go for. USG abdomen and pelvis for renal stone. There are many causes of fever and chills like various infections. In case of meningitis patient will have headache, neck rigidity, high grade fever, dizziness and very ill look. So the possibility for meningitis is less. If he has weight loss along with decreased appetite please contact a physician and do needed investigations.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
