Suggest Treatment For Fever, Loss Of Appetite And Headaches

My daughter is away at college and called to ask advice. She has a headache (crown and behind forehead), a fever of 100, dizziness, loss of appetite. She is just finishing up her senior year, is an RA, has a thesis to finish, job applications on her mind, is taking 18 hours, etc. at first she thought it was stress. She hopes to go by the student health clinic tomorrow but until then, what would be her best course of treatment?

Hi,

Based on the symptoms you have described, your daughter may have a viral or bacterial infection. She needs to seek medical attention from the student health clinic as soon as possible to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan.

In the meantime, there are a few things she can do to help alleviate some of her symptoms:
* Rest: Encourage your daughter to get plenty of rest and avoid overexerting herself. This will help her body fight off the infection.
* Hydration: It is important to stay well hydrated, especially if she has a fever. Consume a lot of fluids like water, herbal tea or electrolyte drinks as they are helpful.
* Fever reduction: Over-the-counter medications such as acetaminophen or ibuprofen can help reduce fever and alleviate headaches. However, it is important to follow the recommended dosage instructions and not exceed the daily maximum.
* Nourishment: While the loss of appetite is common during illness, it is important to ensure your daughter is still getting enough nutrients to support her immune system. Encourage her to eat light and healthy meals such as soups or smoothies and avoid heavy or fatty foods.

Your daughter needs to seek medical attention as soon as possible, especially if her symptoms worsen or persist.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Priyanka, General & Family Physician
