General & Family Physician 's  Response
HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

If he has meningitis, he should be in the hospital for treatment, this is infection of an area of the brain. If this infection his present, he needs to go either to the ER or his doctor.

It is possible that he may have pharyngitis which is infection of the throat. The antibiotics are not going to have an immediate effect, it would take a few days before improvement is noted.
He can continue the course of antibiotics given, rest, use fluids and take pain killers to help relieve any discomfort.

I hope this helps
