Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Suggest Treatment For Finegoldia Magna Bacterial Infection With Pleural Effusion
My wife had a terrible case of food poisoning that lasted with very bad pains for ten days. Now the doctors say she has a bacteria called finegoldia magna. They say she has pleural effusion and they have removed fluid from outside her lungs three times- the first time one gallon, the second time two quarts, the third time two cups of fluid. I am wondering if this could be connected to leaky gut syndrome. Of course, she has had a very bad time breathing for four months since the food poisoning. Her pulmonologist has put her on clindamycin.
Get clinically examined and required blood tests for investigations. Untreated F. magna may cause a variety of infections that may be life-threatening. F. magna is commonly treated with penicillin V but depending on the pathology diagnosed it can be treated with combination medicine or with clindamycin as in your wives' case.
Treatment of pleural effusion depends on the underlying condition, shortness of breath. To rule out malignancy tests and biopsy will be done. Treatment will be done by removal of fluid by thoracostomy, pleural sclerosis performed with sclerosing agents.
Malignant pleural effusion will be treated with chemotherapy, radiation therapy, infusion of medicines in the chest. Depending on the severity of the symptoms, pathology diagnosed the treating doctor may recommend treatment by surgery.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
