Suggest Treatment For Flu And Swelling Up Feet

Hi, I have a 60 year old female friend who has had the following symptoms over the last six weeks. She is being seen by a doctor, but there are still many unanswered questions. She first felt like she had the flu. Then it felt like a heart attack. Then her feet kept getting bigger and bigger until she could no longer walk. It even started up her calf. The doctor said that her blood pressure was high and that she had fluid build-up and an infection. He put her on blood pressure medication, steroids, and antibiotics. She had no energy in her legs. Her B12 was low, but came back OK later. He gave her a chest xray. She hadn t been eating much and is still losing weight. She is currently at 74 pounds and is approximately 5 2 . The doctor currently has her on a high dose multi-vitamin and a high dose of Vitamin D. She hasn t hardly left the house in six weeks. She is currently able to get out to her garden about an hour a day--which is an improvement from the beginning of this. She is a smoker, has very poor quality teeth (we convinced her to have her top ones pulled and get false teeth last year but the bottom teeth need to have the same done). She exists mainly on a few pretzels and several cans of diet coke per day. We are very worried about her and feel that she needs a second opinion. While she claims she is much better, the rest of us aren t so sure. The doctor ruled out diabetes. Please help. Thanks. Joyce

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

A few probable causes of swelling of feet could be congestive heart failure, right heart failure, acute kidney injury, chronic kidney disease, fulminant liver failure, lymphedema, and deep venous thrombosis. A few investigations that are needed to rule out above conditions are ECG, 2D echocardiography, chest X-ray, Doppler ultrasound, serum creatinine, blood urea, and liver function tests. Patient has t b examined thoroughly and nly then treatment be given. I suggest you take her to a cardiologist once for second opinion.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
