i have hypothyroid and have had it for years for the past few years my levels have gone from 0.9 to 3.46 they go up and down all the time. i have terrible issues like weight gain, tired, swelling etc. my level is 3.46 now and my doctors have never check my other levels they say i dont need it check and will not refer me to a thyroid specialist. is this a normal routine or should i find another doctor
Fluctuating thyroid levels may indicate under dosing. Your thyroid levels although changing, seems to be within normal limits. You have not mentioned the actual dose you are consuming at present. Kindly rule out other hormonal issues like diabetes. Thyroid auto antibodies can also be tested.
Any Fluid retention and hypertension should also be ruled out. Kindly maintain your body mass index within normal limits. Control other co-morbid conditions and recheck your thyroid levels. Physical exercise should also be done to maintain your physical and mental health. This will also stabilise your hormone levels.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
