Suggest Treatment For Fluid Discharge From Wounded Thumb
I smashed my thumb nail two weeks ago. I m going to lose the nail. Currently, I m getting a clear fluid seepage at the base of the nail where it s starting to lift that has an odor to it. It does not hurt to touch the nail. I have slight swelling on the tip of my thumb. Can I use something like Epsom Salts or do I need to see a doctor.
You are having a fluid discharge from the thumb that got smashed. You are also having discomfort and swelling. The treatment of your symptoms is proper wound care. Since you are having seepage, you can start taking a course of antibiotics (Ampilox or Augmentin) so that the wound gets healed in time. Take analgesics, one SOS when needed to reduce pain and discomfort. Cut on carbs and sugar content intake so that wound heals faster.
You should get clinically examined by a GP, sometimes the treatment may need simple incision and drainage of the wound/abscess. At times, the treating doctor may recommend surgery to remove the infected tissue / material and then give conservative treatment.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
