My 6 yr old son has had drainage from his ear for a couple months now. Thick snot like drainage at first but now thinner. He doesn't complain, has no fever. We have been on ciprodex and amoxicillin but still hasn't completely gone away. His ENT now thinks it's possible he will need surgery on the mastoid. Is there any other alternatives before a big surgery like this? Is this a common surgery?
Understanding your concern. As per your query your son have symptoms of fluid in ear which seems to due to ear infection. I would suggest you to put antibiotic ear drops in ear and do warm saline gargles. You should take antibiotic Levofloxacin in combination with antiallergic medication. Visit ENT specialist once and get it examined. You should get otoscopic examination of ear done and go for audimetery testing as well and start treatment after proper diagnosis. Avoid touching and pricking it with sharp object. You can go for mastoid surgery as well only after proper prescription.
Hope your concern has been resolved.
