Suggest Treatment For Frequent Painful Bouts Of Hiccups
I suffer from frequent bouts of hiccups which are hard and sometimes painfull. They happen when I get up from a chair, make a quick movement, and sometimes for no reason at all. They don t last very long but are annoying and uncomfortable. What causes this and what can I do about it?
Hiccups occur due to involuntary spasms of the diaphragm muscle. Excess or fast eating, intake of carbonated beverages, acid reflux, peptic ulcer and Pharyngitis can cause hiccups. Usually hiccups are harmless and will go away. All the above cause should be ruled out. Uncontrolled hiccups, breathing difficulty may require treatment with muscle relaxants like baclofen.
Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Saranya Ramadoss, General & Family Physician
