Suggest Treatment For Fungal Infection On The Toe Nails

3/18 I had my great left toenail removed due to fungus. The toe is still weeping when wrapped, I am still feeling shooting pains in this toe. I am currently also using antibiotics. When should I expect the healing to be completed? What more can I do to help healing besides soaking the toe in epsom?

Hello,

Important points to be remembered regarding toe nail recovery post removal. If the nail plate was completely removed then right after the surgery non-adherent sterile gauze will be used for the dressing of the toe. On top of that, a compression bandage can be used to reduce the bleeding. Next, the patient should reduce movement. This is especially important during the first 24 hours. The leg should be elevated as much as possible.

Acetaminophen and ibuprofen are used for pain reduction. After 24 hours, the dressing is safe to remove and the toe should be soaked in warm water. After soaking, the toe should be dried and a sterile gauze can be placed again on the wound. You should try to keep the toe and the wound dry during the healing period. Pressure on the toe should be avoided so you should not wear shoes which may apply pressure to the toe. One week after surgery you may wear more comfortable shoes.

Your new nail will regrow after 4 to 6 months. You can expect that it will look different than the other nails due to the injury of the nail bed. So you need to wait at least 16 weeks for the new nail to grow completely. Soaking the toe in Epsom and warm water helps in healing.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
