General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

Noted the history about your Mother suffering from foot problem needing multiple amputations although is is not diabetic.
The commonest causes I can think about are as follows:
Vascular insufficiency meaning the blood supply is reduced.
Some granulomatous disease.
Autoimmune disease.
Tobacco in any form.
This can be diagnosed by the following ways:
Tests of blood for liver, kidney functions and as needed.
Ultrasonography and color doppler examination of the lower limbs.
Cardiac evaluation.
All these will lead to a proper diagnosis and once done the medical management can be done to increase blood supply and avoid further amputation.
Care of feet is very important as the infection can set in only if there is any cut or so.
Stop tobacco in any form.
Take multivitamins, mineral and trace elements.
Good diet avoiding oily meals, exercises help further.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
