Suggest Treatment For Gastrointestinal Problems After Taking Meloxicam

I ve been on Lithium Carbonate since 1991 and Citolapram for the last several years. A few months ago I began taking Meloxicam for my arthritis. I also have some GI issues, IBS-D and frequent bowel (and bladder) incontinence. I finally got a GI specialist who wants to do something to improve my incontinence and therefore, my quality of life. I ve had a GI surgery consult and a Pelvic Floor PT consult. Things were looking up. I started taking Benefiber as recommended, a friend of mine gave me a half-used canister she wasn t going to use anymore. After I had used it a few days as directed on the can, I noticed the expiration date was in 2014. Around that time I began feeling dizzy, headachy, lightheaded and slightly nauseous. These symptoms have persisted for 4 days, today will be the fifth. My GP and the Dr. I saw at the after hours clinic last night, ordered a blood draw to check my lithium level and my kidney function. We are considering that my symptoms could be due to low blood pressure (It had registered low over the last 2 months, but not last night.), compromised kidney function (due to interaction of meds.) or to Lithium toxicity (last lithium level was at the peak of normal range, it has always be low or mid range.) My question is, could the expired Benefiber have played a part in my current symptoms? With so much else to cover with a new doctor last night, I didn t think to mention the Benefiber. Can that affect the interaction of the other drugs and kidney function, or could the fact that it was 2 years beyond expiration cause problems? Still dizzy and waiting for an answer, I d rather not bring up the Benefiber and confuse things further, if it couldn t be a factor. Thanks. Barb

Allergist and Immunologist 's  Response
Hi,

Yes, Tizanidine can cause elevations in serum ALT greater than 3 times the upper limit of normal. Referring to studies this happens in approximately 5% of the patient taking Tizanidine.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
