Suggest Treatment For Growing Facial Swelling And Drooping After Laceration On Forehead

My husband got a laceration on his forehead right above his right eye 2 days ago and received 19 stitches to close it up. We noticed that the swelling has started to move down the side of his face. He also has a black eye that developed (even though nothing hit his eye) and drooping on that side of his face. The er diagnosed the drooping as bells palsy from the laceration. Is the swelling moving down the side of his face something we should worry about?

Hi.
Thanks for the query..

As per your complain the swelling moving down the face is due to inflammation caused due to soft tissue injury caused as a result of trauma..
Due to trauma there s exudation of inflammatory cells as well as blood from ruptured blood vessels may also get accumulated in the soft tissues leading to swelling..
Ice packs can help in reducing swelling , while if swelling is severe oral and injectable steroids can be advised by the treating physician so you should consult him once..
For pain Ibuprofen or tylenol can be taken..

The black eye is due to blood accumulating around the soft tissues of the eye due to a blood vessel that must have perforated in the forehead region at the site of injury leading to BLACK EYE..
You need not to worry about it as gradually when the blood will get disintegrated the discolouration will subside but can take a longer time to resolve and you will have to keep patience. You should apply ice packs for 15 to 20 minutes and do it every 2 hours gently around the eye for faster resolution of the discolouration..

Bell's Palsy is due to trauma to the Facial nerve which is a seventh cranial nerve and provide nerve supply to the muscles of face.
Injury to the nerve can lead to facial paralysis on the affected side..
At times the injury is transient and condition resolves completely but the time duration of recovery is unpredictable and can range from a few days to few weeks to months, although in case of bells palsy recovery is comparatively quicker and patient can even start showing signs of improvement within a week of injury..
An MRI or CT SCAN can help in ruling out the severity of the nerve damage to some extent..
The patient is advised to take Steroids like PREDNISOLONE as it helps in recovering soon and completely..
As there can be difficulty in closing the eye on affected side so the eye should be kept covered during sleeping and you can use artificial tear drops for dryness in eye..

As the lip competency is also effected as well as due to numbness food may get stuck in the affected side so maintaining of oral hygeine as there can be infections as well as decays in teeth so taking care of oral hygiene is must..
Facial exercises and massaging the face on affected side with oil can help in improving movement..

Hope this helps..

Regards..
