Suggest Treatment For Hair Loss And Weight Gain While Having Thyroid Disease

In 2010 I started taking 100mcg of Thyroxine. And have not changed my dose. However - now my hair is falling out in large bunches - and I m gaining weight rapidly. My TSH last tested in August 2016 was 2. Should I lower my dose of Thyroxine? I feel like I m over medicating myself. I do not have access to an endocrinologist. Cannot afford it at the moment.

Hi,

Your TSH level is normal at the moment as per August report but you need to evaluate yourself on T3 and T4 levels as well. Also evaluate other hormone levels like Estrogen, Progesterone and testosterone.

Regarding your hair loss, this may be due to excess Thyroxin which you are taking but that cannot be the only reason. Weight gain may also be due to hormonal imbalance. Please let me know if there are any particular parts where fat deposition occurs. I can suggest a hairfall combating spray called Hairzone.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. M Zahoor Bhat
