General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Scalp itchiness and localised loss of hair in the for of patches occur commonly due to alopecia areata. This condition is an autoimmune disease and the cause is unknown. Medications to stimulate the hair growth can be tried and the results vary from patient to patient.

Minoxidil, Anthralin, cortico-steroids are some of the drugs that have reduced the extent of hair fall and can be tried based on your degree of alopecia. Oral immuno-suppressants, like Methotrexate and Cyclosporine are another option. Phototherapy using UV lights has also been useful in few patients.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
