Suggest Treatment For Hard, Movable Lump Behind Knee

I have a hard, moveable (wiggles easily) totally painless lump on the back of my knee, pea-sized, toward the inside and lower than the joint. It feels like it is just under the skin and not very attached to anything. What could this be and how urgent is it to go in to the doctor?

Hello,

You have hard movable lump behind the knee. It is painless, pea -sized, just under the skin. You are suggested to get it clinically examined by a GP, get required blood tests and biopsy done to rule out any malignancy. Your treatment will depend on the pathology detected. If it is abscess or boil it will be treated with antibiotics or drainage if required.

Never attempt to pick at or drain a skin abscess. This can deepen the infection and allow it to spread. Serious medical conditions like malignant tumors, deep vein thrombosis, popliteal artery aneurysms, etc. will be treated accordingly. Stay away from addictions if any. Get clinically examined by a GP. Get treated at the earliest. Neglect may lead to the worsening of the symptoms.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Hello,

Movable lump behind your knee may be due to a Baker's cyst, meniscal cyst, lipoma, popliteal cyst, ganglion, tibial subchondral cyst, or intraneural cysts of anterior tibial nerve.

Only with detailed history, examination of the swelling in person and few tests like ultrasonography and MRI need to be done. It's not any harmful condition but it requires attention. So you can consult a surgeon and get to know the specific diagnosis and appropriate treatment.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
