Suggest Treatment For Headache And Dizziness While On Nifedipine

Hi Doctor, I have been taking Nifedipine (Procardia) 60mgs and have a lot of side effects that really bothered me a lot..my urine output is less and felt this headache and dizziness and sleepy so am taking it at night time only and also taking metropolol in the morning but this meds made my chest pain go away most of the time and really lowers my B/P. I noticed my mother is taking Nifedipine also but the brand name is Adalat. I didn t realize about these two different brand names but their generic is the same until now. What is the difference between these two? and can I take or try my mothers Nifedipine (Adalat)?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

Nifedipine is a calcium-channel blocker commonly prescribed to treat high blood pressure and peripheral vascular diseases and is available in the brand names of Procardia and Adalat.

Side effects of Procardia and Adalat that are similar include dizziness, joint pain, muscle cramps, headache, drowsiness, tired feeling, constipation, stomach pain, insomnia, flushing, and urinating more than usual.

As far as headache and dizziness are concerned you may try message therapy, drink plenty of water, rest in quiet and dimly lit room, or by taking paracetamol.

If you do not get relief, consult your doctor for an alternative effective medication or a possible dose reduction. You may take Adalat but only after consulting your doctor.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Take care

Regards,
Dr. Mohammed Taher Ali, General & Family Physician
