Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
A heart murmur was detected during my newborn checkup after she was born. She was a full term baby and weighed almost 10 pounds. The doctor is referring the baby to a pediatric cardiologist and want to do a cardioechogram (not sure if this is correct). My insurance may not cover the test which I assume is expensive. The doctor says she is gaining weight on schedule and they could not hear the murmur in her back. Is there an alternative to the test ?
In symptomatic cases, chest x ray and ECG will offer some help, although ECHO is the only definitive test and is usually needed to define the exact problem. But in asymptomatic cases, only ECHO is useful, as x ray and ECG are usually normal.
Another approach in asymptomatic and well thriving children is to wait till 3-4 months and reassess, and do ECHO only if the murmur is persisting or any other signs of heart disease present. You can discuss this option with your doctor.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
