Hi. I went up a flight of stairs in Tahoe last week at an elevation of 6200 . When I got to the top of the stairs, my heart began fluttering, and I had a sudden pulsating mildly painful throbbing in the lower back. It stopped after a couple of minutes of rest. But, the episodes de concerns me. I m 62, with diagnosed COPD, 5 8 175 lbs.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

COPD may cause reduced oxygen in the blood which may result in palpitations if you exercise (climb stairs). This is because the heart is trying to compensate for the high oxygen needs when you are having an effort. You will need good treatment for COPD and also quit smoking if you are smoking.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
