Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My husband has had borderline blood pressure readings before but nothing over 130-135. he now has a cold and blood pressure readings are running between 170 to 200 over 110 to 117, He has no symptoms of headaches or vision. We have been to the Urgent care on Monday they told him to get off advil cold and sinus, went to his physician on Wednesday who gave him one pill while in office... it decreased some and he said come back if it goes back up, Friday his office was closed so we went to emergency room and they gave him a ten day script of 10 mg. It is hovering more often around the 170-180 numbers and bottom numbers staying around 110-117, What should we do now.
Blood pressure can raise during times of illness and stress. I would suggest continuing medication and reviewing the blood pressure. if the blood pressure remains over 160/100 add on a second drug. Also adopt a healthy eating plan, exercise and quit smoking if applicable. adopting a low salt diet also helps. If the blood pressure is fluctuating then you would have to be monitored with a device for 24 hours to confirm the diagnosis. please note if the you are young with high blood pressure you will need to undergo some testing such as an ultrasound of the kidneys.
