Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My sister was told that her kidneys are spilling protein. She does not have diabetes. She was told this 20 years ago. As a result of the condition she is on high blood pressure medication because the condition causes the blood pressure to rise. She was of this condition by her doctor 20 years ago who since retired. She does not know the medical name for this condition or the cause of it. Can you help me with his information. Thank you
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.
She is having a condition called “proteinuria” and the cause for it may be something called “nephrotic syndrome”. The antihypertensive of choice for this condition is ACE inhibitors like Captopril or ATBs like Losartan, etc. Do a 24-hour urine protein assay to assess the protein loss in urine. Consult a nephrologist for expert opinion and he will direct you accordingly.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain
