Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I have end stage liver disease due to cirrhosis. I have high blood pressure which has been within range and managed for a long time by me primary care physician. I take Lisinopril. However, after a recent procedure (variceal esphogeal banding) my gastroenterologist prescribed a beta blocker for me. Since the second day I took the medication, my legs, hips, thighs, calfs and feet have become extremely swollen and tight. If I try to cross my legs it feels as though my skin might bust open. I have an appointment with my primary care physician in 4 days, is this something I maybe should go to the emergency room now for?
Beta blockers causes swelling of your legs and ankles due to opening of small blood channels in your body which causes pooling of fluid in your dependent areas of body mainly your legs and ankles. It is not that worrisome, but I would suggest you to consult with your doctor and he may add you a diuretic drug to channel your fluid to be excreted via kidneys. You may experience an increase in passing urine which is quite normal. You may choose to go to an ER if it becomes bothersome.
