Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My daughter is in college and came down with mono this past February. After she finished out her semester, I had her checked out by our family doctor. The blood work showed she had high cholesterol. They were concerned and told her to have it rechecked. Well she left for a two week trip to Europe, and when she came back has been away at school (3 hours away) taking summer courses. Today she donated blood and was told her cholesterol was alarmingly high (I don t know the actual numbers, but the blood donation place called her at home later to inform her). She is otherwise a healthy girl (5 2 125 lbs), eats healthy, and exercises regularly. My question is: can this high cholesterol be caused from having mono? What should she do to address this? (her primary care doctor is out of town until August, and she can t come home anyway becaue of work and classes)
* A high cholesterol level is not a sole cause for having mono-infection.
* Depending upon the type of cholesterol as triglyceride, chylomicron, HDL and LDL levels in the blood various parameters of diet and medications has to be sorted out as there are ample number of anti-cholesterol molecules to be chosen among
- HMG CoA reductase inhibitors as statin drugs
- Fibrates affecting lipoprotein lipase enzyme
- Cholestyramine affecting brush border of intestines
- Niacin affecting LDL receptor
- others
Need to consult an expert physician for a detailed evaluation of the same and get further information about controlling the same.
Meanwhile, you should avoid spices, non-veg, junk foods and indulge in regular exercises to control body weight.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Take care
