Hello,
High fever with watery diarrhea are clear signs of the need of admission into a hospital. Please do not delay but take the 2 year old immediately to a hospital. Complications of watery diarrhea are
severe dehydration, electrolyte depletion and imbalance, drastically low blood pressure, and high fever that can cause seizures.
Causes of diarrhea are rotavirus infection, bacteria such as salmonella, food poisoning, cow
milk allergy,
lactose intolerance, toddlers diarrhea, and Amoebic dysentery. The first and foremost thing you have to do is give adequate oral rehydration therapy. Please do not give plain water. Please do not give juices as it aggravates diarrhea.
Due to repeated stools and washing the area,
anal fissure may develop in due course. Please
consult a pediatrician and know if the diarrhea has a bacterial, virus or parasite cause; he would be able to point at the specific diagnosis and give appropriate treatment. Anti-parasitic medications such as Metronidazole*, Paromomycin and Iodoquinol, are commonly used to treat dysentery caused by amoebiasis.
Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
