Suggest Treatment For High Sodium Levels And Shaking Of Hands And Legs

My father is 76 years old and suffering from congestive heart failure. Recently he also had hyponatramia and he was under IV for sodium levels to bring it to normal. Right now it is 131 and now his hands are shaking and legs are little swollen again. Can you please advise what needs to be done?

Hello
I am Dr Mittal
I will try to answer your query

However, I am not sure from your query what you need, cause your query says high sodium levels, and your description of the query says low sodium. Considering the levels you have given, and the description that fits into hyponatremia, I will talk about that.

Ideally, sodium levels are maintained in the diet. However, there are chances that he is on medicines, especially diuretics that is causing the sodium levels to fall. This fall of the sodium levels may cause the tremors.

Alternatively, he may be taking low sodium in diet, in view of the cardiac condition.

I would suggest you give him foods high in salt like pickles. In addition, you can give him salt capsules.

Check sodium levels regularly, along with urine for spot sodium

It would be a good idea to talk to your doctor about medicines he is on

Best of luck
Dr Mittal
