Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I was recently diagnosed with hydrocephalus at the age of 33. I was told it was chronic and on investigation communicating . I ve had 2 different doctors... One very concerned... One that didn t give me the time of day. I ve had a CT scan on my original diagnosis and thus diagnosed by the concerned doctor.... A few months later I had an MRI scan and it was explained to me that I was made this way and they have no plans yet for a shunt although I have a further appointment in a few months (1 yr 6months) after my last serious seizure although the I ve had secures for the last 10 years but never had a brain scan.... Could you please help me with some queries... Are all babies born with Hydro with large heads as I certainly wasn t. Also would it be a concern to have a doctor choose not to consider surgery despite a history of unexplained seizures as I had not had a brain scan... I simply want to ensure I m getting the best care.. Many thanks in advance..
Hi I had read your question and understand your concern. See , medical treatment in hydrocephalus is used to delay surgical intervention. Medical treatment is not effective in long-term treatment of chronic hydrocephalus. It may induce metabolic consequences and thus should be used only as a temporizing measure.
Medications affect CSF dynamics by the following mechanisms: (a) By decreasing CSF secretion by the choroid plexus - Acetazolamide and furosemide (b) By increasing CSF reabsorption - Isosorbide
I hope this information was of help. Wish you good health. Thankyou
