I don t really have a question, but I want to share an experience I ve had. This morning I read Dr. Komaroff s response to a question about hyperparathyroidism. He made the comment that he had never seen a case of hyperparathyroidism. Is it that rare? In my early fifties, I was diagnosed with this problem. The doctors didn t seem very familiar with it and strung me along for almost 2 yrs before I emphatically said I want to go to Duke Medical Hospital in North Carolina. My bones hurt badly, I was nauseated for much of the time, and this problem was attacking my central nervous system. As soon as the doctors at Duke measured the amount of calcium in my blood stream, they immediately scheduled surgery. They removed the malfunctioning parathyroid gland. That took care of the problem. I just wanted to share my experience after having read the column today. I thiink this is the first column I have seen concerning this issue.
