Suggest Treatment For Hyperthyroidism

For the past 6 mos I have been getting sick on and off I went to my doctor and they did a series of tests including a blood test. They found several allergies but also that I am Hyperthyroid which was the reason for several syptoms. I was then referred to an endocrinologist who then did an ultrasound to find that a nodule that was discovered about 1.5 years ago that was then 1 cm has grown to 4 cm. I am now in the process of more testing a biopsy and a thyroid scan. My question is what is the proceedure for this. Is it normal for a nodule of this size to by removed? There is also a family history of thyroid cancer my grandma and her brother. I am a 23year old female.

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
Thank you for asking. I read your concerns carefully.
As you are diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and the ultrasound shows only a nodule, without other problems, it means that this nodule is responsible for the overproduction of the thyroid hormones and is called hot nodule.
To confirm that it is a hot nodule (or toxic adenoma), scintiscan is helpful.
So the next step will be the scintiscan.
Hot nodules has a very very low risk of malignancy and usually biopsy is not performed for them.
Anyway, after some months of treatment with tablets to stabilize the hormonal level, you will need a definite treatment for the nodule in order to prevent further episodes of hyperthyroidism.
Hope the information is helpful. It will be a pleasure to answer further questions in the future.
Kind regards,
Dr.Mirjeta
