Hi My girl friend (age 24) is suffering from hyperthyroidism. Though the symptoms are identified for past 6 months we could only visit doctor very recently a week ago and confirmed the hyperthyroidism. Please suggest the course of treatment and scan test procedures.
Hello and thank you for using HCM! I do understand your concern and i will try to give you some more informations about hyperthyroidism diagnosis and treatment. There are two main causes of hyperthyroidism: 1) Graves' disease (which is the most common at the age of your girlfriend) 2) One or more nodules within the thyroid gland that produce a large amount of thyroid hormones. After having done the hormonal level and confirm the hyperthyroidism the next step to be done to confirm the cause would be a thyroid scintiscan (pregnancy is an contraindication). If Graves' disease is suspected, antireceptor antibodies should be measured because their titter gives us important information about the prognosis of the disease. As about the treatment, oral tablets are indicated for 6-12 months. Hope i was somewhat helpful with my information.
Kind regards, Dr.M.Guni
