Suggest Treatment For Inability To Speak Or Move While Treating Pulmonary Embolism And Pneumonia

I was recently in the hospital for a Pulmonary Embolism, Pneumonia, and finally a drug reaction that lead to inability to focus on thoughts initially, then followed by inability to speak or move. I believe it was from the combination of a Beta-Blocker Metoprolol and the nebulizer Atrovent which is a Beta Antagonist. BP in the 200 s / 150 s HR tachy. But, looking through list of other meds, Chlorpheniramine-Hydrocodone does cause the lack of focus of thoughts also. The other symptom before I couldn t communicate was burning in my lungs and bronchospams. Have you seen this type of reactions before? How common?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Inability to focus on thoughts and confusion is a side effect of Atrovent, metoprolol, chlorpheniramine and hydrocodone. Bronchospasms may be adverse effect of metoprolol. Inability to move and speak may be a hyper-sensitivity reaction and is not solely caused by any drug that you have taken. Hypersensitivity reactions are common but inability to move and speak are not so common.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
