Suggest Treatment For Increased Heart Beat In A Person With Anxiety Disorder

My 45 year old son has an anxiety disorder that developed after his father died three years ago. Today his heart has been racing all day and he is in Aruba on vacation. Should he be worried about the racing heart which he has had on other occasions for 8 hours or so. Should I suggest he go to an ED?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Though a beta blocker like Propranolol can help lower the heart rate, I would suggest a visit to ED and get an EKG done.
It is very difficult to give advise on medicines especially for fast heart beats without seeing the patient in person. As there are a lot of factors that can decide the treatment like Heart rate per minute, regularity of heart beats, any other symptoms like fainting, chest pain, nausea.
So it is better if he is seen by a doctor in person. Thank you
