I have a beautiful grandson who is 9 years old !! He is struggling with being able to go to sleep at nights. His parents are stressed to the limit because after being awake for long or short periods of time...he gets up and they send him back to bed and this can go on for hours. Eventually the whole house is disrupted. The parents are at their wits end. I know it is not an easy fix but will accept any kind of help !!!!
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
Insomnia is a child is really distressing. In most cases the children have underlying severe anxiety that cause insomnia. First thing I would advise for him is to improve sleep hygiene.
Don't let him watch or read from bed. Fix his time to go to bed. His bed should be in cool calm and dark room. He should be relaxed and reassured prior to sleep. Ask his to not to think about sleep again and again. Warm water bath in evening helps a lot in sleeping.
If symptoms persist even after that then consult a psychiatrist for his problems. If anxiety is found then anti anxiety drugs like low dose sertraline can help in reducing anxiety as well as sleep. Benzodiazepines in very low doses can be utilised for short periods of time. So I would advise you to consult a psychiatrist for his evaluation and treatment.
Thanks, hope this helps you.
