Sleep disturbance is an indicator of probable underlying stress related disorders. In a person with other medical problems, rather than take prescription medications, it would be helpful to follow sleep hygiene techniques such as: avoid caffiene, daily exercise, reduce electronic use after 8pm, avoid daytime naps and to have dinner before 8 pm. Consult a doctor to slowly taper and stop her sleep medications, as it should not be stopped abruptly. In case she has depression / anxiety affecting sleep, she should receive treatment for those, which will also improve sleep.
