Suggest Treatment For Insomnia

My father is 82 d and had TIA in December 2014; he had been recovering well for 3 months. But his main problem is insomnia - he has been dependent on Zolfresh 5-10 mg every day for more than 8 years; plus he has a begnin prostate condition. And Docs do not want to recommend sleeping pills becuase of possible effect on TIA. His medications for the last 3 months have been: Repace 25 + Dilzam 30 (after breakfast) Omez 20 (before lunch) Ecosprirn 150 (after lunch) Repace 25 + Dilzam 30 (after tea) Omez 20 (before dinner) Atorvastatin 40 (after dinner) Urimax .40 (after dinner) Inspite of Urimax, his urination is 4-5 times in the night and this is accompanied by obsessiveness (due to lack of sleep) of wanting to go to bathroom every hour. Please can you recommend some sleeping aid that is not dependent. Also he is getting to be very staggering in his walk and we are scared to let him go walking to the bathroom by himself, as he might have his black-outs. Is it because of urimax?

Anesthesiologist 's  Response
Hello,

Staggering gait may be due to dizziness caused by Urimax. Regarding sleep, there are no medicines that help sleep but are not dependent. Almost all those medications which help in getting sleep are dependent. Zolfresh is a better drug in view of his age and other medical conditions. It is not dangerous to kidneys and liver. So you can continue Zolfresh 10 mg.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.
