Suggest Treatment For Intermittent Lower Abdominal Pain

Hi, I am having low abdominal pain, and the best way I can describe it is this, it feels like labor pains, like a severe pain, then stops for a while (It absolutely, definitely not labor pains though). Nothing that I am doing makes any difference with the pain, such as sitting, lying, eating, bathroom. It just randomly comes & goes. I am planning on calling my doctor to try and schedule a visit for tomorrow, but just wondering if an ER visit may be necessary. I am 58, and otherwise in good heath. Thanks, Carol

Hello,

Intermittent pain in lower abdomen may be due pelvic inflammatory disease is an infectious and inflammatory disorder of the upper female genital tract, including the uterus, fallopian tubes, and adjacent pelvic structures. Other causes could be endometriosis, adnexal tumors, ovarian cysts, appendicitis, interstitial cystitis, uterine fibroids, renal or kidney stones or hernia. All these above conditions are probabilities.

For accurate diagnosis, you need in person thorough clinical examination and if necessary some tests like ultrasonography abdomen and pelvis. You don't need to go to ER. You can schedule an appointment in person with your doctor as early as possible. For pain relief you can take NSAIDs like ibuprofen twice daily. Tab. Meftal spas can also be taken twice daily to relieve pain until you see the doctor.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Pallavi M., Anesthesiologist
