Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am 27 yrs old. i have very irregular periods. periods have stopped for few months now. my doctor has suggested to take regesterone for 1 week, post which generally my periods start. but i do not like the dependency on medicine to start periods. is anything wrong with me?
Irregular or delayed periods can be due to different causes but to find out the cause, you would need blood tests and imaging.
The possible causes are: (1) abnormal levels of thyroid hormone (2)emotional or physical stress or illness (3)high prolactin hormone levels (4)polycystic ovarian syndrome (5)high intensity exercises or poor diet
Blood test for thyroid hormone levels, prolactin, testosterone (can normally be found in low levels in females) may be needed. An ultrasound of the pelvis to take a look at the uterus and ovaries (checking for polycystic ovarian syndrome), would also be required.
I hope this helps
