Suggest Treatment For Irregularity In Period

My 14-year old granddaughter has irregular periods that can be very heavy. She is often cold and tired and her diet (she is in boarding school) leaves much to be desired. She skips breakfast, may eat only a bagel for lunch...Often wn't eat the "mystery meat" at school in spite of our urgings. (I'm a dietitian.)Her recent Hgb is 13.2, Hct 38.7, ferritin 21. So, there is no evidence of anemia. She is taking 400mg of iron daily which sounds astronomical to me. Have you any advice for us? Thank you

Hi welcome to HCM

I have gone thru your query regarding irregularity in periods of your G daughter . It is a matter of concern ,but not cause for worry as it so happens with girls in teens due to various reasons .
Excessive exercise, birth control pills, stress, and eating disorders, medication , drug use, are few factors to be considered which can influence her periods .
Irregular Menstrual Cycles and Missed Periods are Normal for the two years of starting .
Since a teenage girl is growing, her hormones are going to be fluctuating and this can change the amount of blood and the length of your period from one cycle to the next . Body eventually develops a regular cycle .

As long as has has one period every three months, would be fine. But always consult a doctor if you’re worried about anything

Regular exercise ,yoga , pranayam - deep breathing and dietery changes , including essential nutrients - Vitamins , minerals ,antioxidants in natural form can help her lead natural life .
As you are a dietitian ,you can guide her in this respect .
Hope this helps solve your query . Take care ,all the best
