Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I think I have IBS, my doctor said "Irritable bowel syndrome? - whatever that is?" I lack confidence in him. I have read all IBS symptoms and they are what I have. I have just turned 74 and am getting terribly frustrated. I haven't had a cooked meal in about 7 years due to me having continuing bowel blockages, (I have had 7 hernia repairs) and I eat very sparingly - I do eat chocolate though! any ideas? Regards, Marie, Ashburton, NZ
Hello thanks for asking from HCM for your health related queries
I can understand your concern. Irritable Bowel Syndrome is a psychiatric condition in which individuals have some unconscious stress or anxiety which result in symptoms related to bowel functions. They might suffer from persistent constipation or some times diarrhoea. In conditions that result in stress or anxiety these symptoms get worse. With proper treatment most of individuals recover from symptoms and feel better. So there is no need to remain frustrated. Visit a psychiatrist for evaluation of your symptoms.
In most of the individuals with IBS treatment with medicines like Clinidium Bromide with Chlordiazepoxide helps to improve the symptoms. They are advised to take high fibre diet which results in improvement of symptoms. For more severe cases anti anxiety drugs like SSRIs are advised. Please consult a psychiatrist for help.
Thanks, Hope this helps you. Take care
