Suggest Treatment For Ischemic Strokes In An Elderly Person
Hello, I am a 55 year old female, had an ischemic cerebellar stroke 9 months ago (no history, no hypertension, no diabetes, no cardiovascular problems, cholesterol fine...I feel it was caused by stress-related migraines) and am hoping it was an anomaly. Was told to take low-dose aspirin daily. Still having regular periods (average age of menopause with women in my family is 58), but since taking aspiring they are excessively heavy (including large clots) and long, and more frequent. I have now been bleeding heavily during this period for 2 1/2 weeks. Hard not to make the connection with the aspirin. Should I stop taking it? Thank you.
I would recommend you to have a gynecological exam and possibly a transvaginal ultrasound to rule out other gynecological causes of the bleeding. If all is normal then aspirin can be the cause and you can stop it. On the other hand, all this should be done after you consult your doctor. You may also need some blood tests to rule out anemia as a complication of bleeding.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards, Dr. Antoneta Zotaj, General & Family Physician
