i have an itching and a scratchy anus and the area around the ass. i have suffered from this for the last six 6 years all the way from secondary school where i used a dirty piece of cloth to wipe my anus. i have been using ointment medications but to no help. sometimes there is discharge when i scratch a lot or with a lot of warmth. with a lot of hair around the anus its getting worse and am not even able to walk very far before i start feeling itchy and constant pain. help me doctor
The symptoms and signs are suggestive of a condition called pruritus ani. Washing carefully and using baby wipes several times daily to keep the area clean and dry may soothe itching. Avoiding irritants and applying zinc oxide or petroleum jelly can provide symptomatic relief. If symptoms persist better to consult a dermatologist and get evaluated, in that case fungal infections also has to be ruled out. If there is diagnostic confusion a skin scraping biopsy may be needed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
Regards,
Dr. Shinas Hussain, General & Family Physician
