My 6yo son is in leg casts due to bilateral heal breaks. He is dealing with the annoying itchness and has rashes extended from the top of his casts up to his groin. I also realized he had a scab under one of the casts by accident as I slid my finger down (better my finger than his nails) and unfotunately I pulled it off and it was bleeding. I am concerned about the rash and the obvious sore under the cast. Benadryl seems to relieve the itching temporairly but does nothing for the rash. And it appears that he is now getting itchy spots on his back and hands as well. He has been in the casts for approximately 2 weeks and did not undergo any surgery prior to splint or cast placement. They have not gotten wet- he has nothing but spongebaths since this happened. Anything to relieve this or might there be more going on than just common itchness?
