Suggest Treatment For Itching On The Legs And Face

My mom is starting to complain about her skin becoming very itchy. She has circulation problems with her legs so her doctor recommended binding her legs. Her legs are getting very red and itchy and I ve read that it could be because her sweat glands are being blocked by the binding. However she is now telling me her face is now very itchy. It s been very hot here in Hawaii but she wears no makeup or puts anything that could be blocking her sweat glands. Can you tell us what could be the cause?

Hello.
From what you have mentioned, I understand it could be from chronic venous insufficiency in the legs that has led to severe dryness and itching of the skin. Compression stockings are commonly used to help improve the circulation. Anti-histamines like cetrizine are recommended to help with the itching. Cleaning the legs well, tapping them dry, applying some medicated powder and wearing the compression stockings or ace bandage may help. As far as the face itching is considered, there may not be anything related to the legs. It is best to avoid make up as she is doing now. Clean the face well and apply a moisturizer or sunscreen. In case of any rash or increase in the symptoms, please see a PCP. If she started any new medications, you may want to review this with her doctor to see if it is an allergic reaction to them. Drink plenty of water at least 10 to 12 glasses, keep the body well moisturized. Rest in a cool place. In case the redness in the leg increases, please see the doctor immediately as she may require a course of antibiotics. Circulation problems in the leg can very commonly cause skin infections called cellulitis due to the unhealthy skin.
