Suggest Treatment For Itching On The Scalp In An Elderly Person

Hi, I am 82 years old, very active until six months ago where I developed a itchy scalp.Didnt bother me for a little while but in the last 2 months the itch esculated and drove me crazy. I spent six months down in Bendigo looking after my daughter after her hip replacement. The itch didn t get any better ,and it was embaressing, I arrived back on the Gold Coast this month and went today to the Cancer clinic to have my check up,already have missed my 3 and 6 months checks. The first thing I told him was that my scalp was so itchy I was breaking down and crying with the stress of it. He immediately examined my scalp and said you head is covered in warts and that is why the itch. I would be grateful for your reply..

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hello,

From your description and your age, you may be suffering from a dandruff condition. Hormonal changes with age may cause your scalp to get oilier or drier causing itching. Also, any hair dye or coloring products which you may be allergic to, even if they are natural dyes.
Do you see any rashes or bumps on your scalp?
I would advise you to use a dandruff shampoo for scalp such as Keto-B (ketoconazole based) till it subsides and continues it once a week for maintenance. On other days you may use a mild shampoo.
Dont apply any hair products like gels, oil etc. For now, you may also take an antihistamine like levocet or fexofenadine for the itching.
Keep a check if sun exposure makes it worse.
Given your age you can also check your sugar levels, liver and kidney function (general health check-up) if symptoms persist, after consulting a dermatologist.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Ivan R. Rommstein, General Surgeon
