Hi I am having symptoms of poison oak or ivy. It looks like blisters but there is no oils related to them. The rash is on my stomach, my right arm, and possibly my head(not my face). It doesn t look like poison oak because it doesn t run in lines. It itches and stings. I am female and 73 years old. I hope you can help me figure out what this is and the best way to treat it. Thanks. My email is: YYYY@YYYY

Hello,

You are having rash on your stomach, arm and head. It is itching and also hurts. You are suggested to take care of your hygiene. Wash thoroughly the area affected with antibacterial soap or lotion. Avoid the use of perfumed or harsh soap or lotion. Wear soft cotton clothes. To get rid of the itchy rash, apply ointment hydrocortisone on the area affected. You can take non-sedating antihistamine orally to reduce the symptoms of allergy. Get your clothes washed in hot water frequently.

Stay away from dust, animal dander, food that may trigger allergy, fumes, paints, chemicals, pollution, poison ivy, etc. Shampoo your hair with Selsun shampoo to keep your scalp clean. Do not touch or scratch. Cold compression on the area affected will give relief. Since it hurts, you should get clinically examined by a dermatologist to detect or rule out contact dermatitis, allergic dermatitis, any sexually transmitted disease, herpes, shingles, etc. You will be treated accordingly with antivirals / antibiotics.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Nupur K., General & Family Physician
