Suggest Treatment For Joint Effusion In Knee

Hi. My son is 10 yrs old. He fell yesterday after school and his knee pop 3 times and then he fell straight to the ground. It pop twice this morning. I took him to a care now and they did an x-ray and the findings were::: the joint space is normal. The suprapatellar recess is distended which is indicative of a joint effusion. No acute or aggressive osseous lesion is demonstrated. Impression::: there is a joint effusion. My question is should we go see a orthopedic or just wait. No fever. He is still in pain. And he has been putting ice on and off every 15 mins.

Hi,Thanks for your query. After going through your query I came to know that your 10 year son fell yesterday and got knee swelling .He got probably collection of blood inside the joint called hemathrosis. He has no fever, only pain .Its treatment is rest,icing and analgesics such as ibuprofen till pain and swelling reduced .You have already excluded fracture by x-ray. Now he only needs rest. Probably swelling will reduce in 5-7 days. You can wait but if fever develop than contact immediately to orthopedic. You can discuss with your treating Doctor about it.
