Suggest Treatment For Knee Pain And Knee Cap Swelling After Injury

I tripped over a concrete stop in a parking lot and fell a couple of weeks ago. I fell flat and hit the asphalt the full length of my body, with a nose injury the most urgent concern. It was taken care of at the local hospital emergency room. There didn t appear to be any other injuries, except for a skinned right knee discovered that night when getting ready for bed. Now the knee is painful below and above knee cap and swelling developing on tip of knee cap that gets bigger as the day wears on. It causes pain if I bend the knee past 90 degrees. I m in the process of cardio rehab and having difficulty using the recumbent bicycle and elliptical machines since my short legs require bending past 90 degrees. Walking doesn t cause as much pain but the leg feels weak. What can I do to lessen pain/swelling. I can t get an appointment with orthopedist until next Thursday. My email address is YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
Hi,

This indicates one of the following:
- Soft tissue trauma caused by hit on the knee area
- Ligament injury
- Internal ligament injury
- Fracture of patella or other bones

This can be diagnosed well by the following:
- Clinical evaluation by your doctor/ orthopedic surgeon
- MRI of knee joint
Anti-inflammatory medicines like Ibuprofen if it suits you. Further management as per the findings of MRI; for examples if there is fracture or ligament injury then you may need plaster or surgery.

Take care. Hope I have answered your question. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. T. Chandrakant, General Surgeon
